The Coyotes will begin a two-game road trip on Wednesday night when they take on the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The puck drops at 8 p.m. Arizona time.

Arizona will be looking to snap a two-game losing skid in which it has scored just three goals.

"We need to raise our desperation and compete," defenseman Connor Murphy said. "We need to turn it around before things slip away from us."

Goalie Mike Smith, who hasn't played since suffering a lower-body injury during the second game of the season on Oct. 18, is expected to return to the lineup for this game. So is center Martin Hanzal, who has missed the past five games because of injury. The Coyotes sent goalie Justin Peters and center Christian Dvorak to the American Hockey League on Tuesday to make room on the roster for Smith and Hanzal.

"Both of them had a good, hard practice again today," Head Coach Dave Tippett said after Tuesday's on-ice session at Gila River Arena. "If there are no repercussions (Wednesday) morning, and they're ready to go, we'll put them in."

The Coyotes need a morale lift after losing two straight games at home to Winnipeg and Boston.

"They're two good veteran players," Tippett said. "Anytime you get your No. 1 goalie back, that gives your club a boost. And Marty Hanzal, we know the importance he has on our team as a centerman just to stabilize us in that position."

Radim Vrbata will enter the game leading the team with six goals and looking to extend a four-game point streak. He is tied with David Ellett for 16th place on the franchise's all-time point list with 299.

Captain Shane Doan has 552 assists and needs just one more to tie Thomas Steen for most helpers in franchise history. Doan also is just three goals shy of 400.

Calgary will be seeking a second consecutive win after beating Minnesota, 1-0, on Tuesday at the Xcel Energy Center. Backup goalie Chad Johnson stopped all 27 shots he faced and Johnny Gaudreau scored the lone goal. Gaudreau suffered a broken finger in the game and will not play vs. the Coyotes.

Head Coach Glen Gulutzan said the Flames must be ready to play on back-to-back nights.

"We can't look at our situation as far as a negative," Gulutzan told reporters. "We've just got to go in and do the same thing another night against an Arizona team that is waiting for us. We've got to be strong mentally now and just push through these things."

The Flames, who are 8-2-0 vs. the Coyotes in the past 10 meetings in Calgary, rank next to last in the NHL in goals allowed with 58. Only Philadelphia has given up more goals (60).

Rookie Matthew Tkachuk, the son of former Coyotes captain Keith Tkachuk, has notched three goals and three assists in his first season. The Flames picked the 18-year-old left wing with the sixth overall selection at this year's NHL Draft.

Does this mean the rest of our vets are bad players (not that I'd disagree)? Does this mean that veteran players are better than youngsters(Dvorak probably brings more to the team than Hanzal at this point--if you take out Hanz's size)? If the team must rely on Hanzal and Smitty to be "good" we're in for a looooong season (of course it appears that way anyway). Honestly, even if Hanzal can screen goalies, most of our shooters are stinking it up, so the screens would be practically useless.

Hanzal will only be on the ice for a couple games or so. And then it will be right back to: https://youtu.be/ekQ_Ja02gTY?t=14s

Well, we're kind of taking a turn for the worse with Richardson now out for pretty much the rest of the season. Hopefully, they'll look to make a move of some sort to re-tweak the roster.

I wonder what Strome's future with the team (at least this season) will be after that mistake. They should probably just send him back to Juniors since Tippett will probably scratch him for 10 games (or so) after that. Of course, why Strome and Doan were out there as the forwards on the OT 3-on-3 is another
