Coyotes announce new arena in Tempe

Postby Stunned on Mon Nov 14, 2016 12:49 pm

Love the idea of the Coyotes moving closer to me and being on the East side again. I thought they were heading toward a deal with the Pima tribe to build at the 101 and Mckellips (old drive-in location). Not sure I'm in love with this physical location and what I believe will be a bad congestion issue. Really not fired up about using tax payer money *again*.

KPNX: Coyotes Arena Announcement report.

KPNX wrote:The NHL's Arizona Coyotes announced a tentative deal Monday to build a new hockey arena on land currently occupied by an Arizona State University golf course in Tempe.

The announcement would leave the City of Glendale, the Coyotes' home for the last 13 years, without a major tenant for the city-owned Gila River Arena as soon as three years from now. Glendale still owes an estimated $200 million to pay off arena construction.

The Coyotes' new 16,000-seat arena would go up at the current site of ASU's Karsten Golf Course, at the northwest corner of South McClintock Drive and Rio Salado Parkway, according to a team news release. The team's rink would be next a 4,000-seat multipurpose arena for use by ASU.

The project would also include a hotel and other amenities in the second phase.

The Coyotes' search for a new arena has been stymied in the past by the team's inability to finance a project that could cost $300 million to $500 miillion.

The new arena would be the first project developed inside the ASU Athletic Facilities District, which has the ability to finance projects through tax revenue generated on the 330-acre site.

It is possible that tax revenue generated by the Coyotes would go toward financing the arena construction.

The team and Catellus Development Corp. have set a June 2017 deadline to create a "budget, design and operational plan" for the project, according to the news release.

The team will hold a news conference at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Gila River Arena to discuss the arena announcement.

What will Goldwater Institute have to say about that...?! :palm:

You would have to think that AEG will have to bring in another major tenant to make GRA work financially.

I have no idea what they'd do or are planning to do at the existing site. And I'm having a hard time imagining how the location isn't going to simply wither as an entertainment destination.

That's true, but can light rail support the volume?

Really hoping this comes off, get some positive news for us Yotes fans!
Though, as ever, especially as my club here in Manchester is trying to build a new rink, I will believe things when I see diggers!

Adding and removing trains isn't hard. It's just the county needs to buy them

Yea, but since the run directly in traffic, there has to be a practical limit to how often you can run a train even if you had an unlimited supply. I'll admit that I don't drive the routes along the line very often, but I'm imagining that increased train traffic is at other peoples expense.
